You're amazing!

I just finished watching a video by spoken word artist Prince Ea entitled 'I Sued The School System'. He has another video which captured High School students reactions to the video. I have read many articles about the education system in the United States and they all say the same thing. Our education system is broken! People are unique and yet the system is the same for everyone. The school system teaches to the test and most of what is taught is not relevant to everyday life. Every person is amazing and unique and yet the school system doesn't act like it. I believe that our educational priorities need to be examined and changed to place greater emphasis on the individual. More emphasis should be placed on critical thinking instead of core competencies.

  1. Agreed! There may be great value to going small again; Little House on the Prairie style. If we did pare down the ratio of teacher/student, on a national level - spanning all tiers of education, how many teachers would want to stay in their job? What I mean to say is: just as there are different styles of learning, there are also copious techniques to teaching. Another consideration in our present day are choices toward higher learning via online courses/degrees. It seems to me teaching our children modern computer technology has been proven to be successful for the masses. Are we raising a new generation of individuals at risk of being 'left behind' if their learning style does not thrive in distinction to completing online coursework designed to teach oneself? Many higher learning opportunities at colleges/universities now fashion their course/degree algorithm around offering online courses/degrees. Is it really fair to pay an institution/teachers for an online course or degree when one can go to the old fashioned physical library or power up their computer to teach themselves? Is online teaching/learning another variation of ‘teaching to the test’, or even, teaching to the check?
